Everything You Want to Know About the Highs and Lows of CBD Lube

First things first: historically, I am not a lube person. I have friends who preach the gospel of personal lubrication as if it turned their sex lives into an endless slip and slide in the water park of pleasure, but after a few harrowing experiences sticking to the sheets thanks to the decidedly unsexy effects of Astroglide, I decided to just rely on whatever moisture my body produced naturally. But I always secretly wondered if I was missing out - were other people enjoying putting cold and often strawberry scented foreign substances on and around their nether regions? Had I written it off too quickly?

I may not be a lube person, but everyone who knows me knows that I am a CBD person. Taking it orally has worked wonders on everything from period cramps to migraines to good old existential anxiety, and using it topically unknots my muscles when I inexplicably pull my neck while sleeping (being 30 is wild). It seems to help every part of my brain and body relax and take a much needed deep breath, so I jumped at the chance to try Apothecanna’s CBD infused Personal Intimacy Oil, and find out what 50 milligrams of CBD will do to your erogenous zones.

Here’s my verdict: consider me a convert. This sleek and sexy massage oil is singlehandedly responsible for rebuilding my relationship with everyone's favorite pleasure-enhancing liquid. It’s safe to say I have finally seen the light (multiple times, if we’re being honest).

Silky soft and made from simple, all natural ingredients like coconut oil, argan oil, and sunflower seed oil, my skin drank this lightweight oil up, and I didn't feel the instant urge to shower afterwards (though you still probably should). I love that it’s made without parabens, phthalates, artificial fragrances, petroleum, or alcohol, so you can use as much as you want and get as freaky as you want without worrying about irritating your skin or ingesting something chemical.

Three or four pumps of the product create a slick, frictionless glide without any of that notorious stickiness, and the subtle scent of musky jasmine and smoky hemp lingers lightly in a way that sets the mood for all your senses.

But the sensation is what really sold me. CBD won’t get you high - it’s derived from hemp, which is like weed’s earthy, non-psychoactive cousin - but the combination of relaxed muscles and increased blood flow certainly felt like a warm and tingly body high to me. Everywhere I used it felt more sensitive than usual and highly receptive to any touch, which is one of the many reasons CBD lube is thought to be effective for people who experience pain or discomfort during sex (it also decreases inflammation). Whether by yourself or with a partner, it helps you focus on what you’re feeling in the moment and in your body – it heightens sensitivity and turns down anxiety, which can lead to less inhibitions and more intense orgasms. And while it can’t guarantee increased arousal, it’s hard not to feel turned on when you’re feeling good from the inside out and glistening like an Instagram filter come to life.

The only downside I found is that their Sexy Time oil is formulated with a highly moisturizing coconut oil base, which, like all oil-based lubes, can potentially degrade latex condoms. But that doesn’t mean you shouldn’t use it to enhance pleasure, decrease discomfort, and add some fun experimental energy to foreplay. My recommendation? Use regularly, apply generously to yourself and your partner, think outside the box, and be prepared to reconsider everything you thought you knew about lube.
